We are craving some long drives and overnight stays in some of the most beautiful parts of Colorado. You won’t miss ordinary camp sites once you are off the pavement. Check out these six off road camping destinations.
Cottonwood Pass
A bit outside of Buena Vista is Cottonwood pass that connects to Almont on the other side of the divide. The west side of Buena Vista contains the most campgrounds near Taylor Park Reservoir. Cruise down the dirt road to find some creekside spots all around Taylor Park Reservoir. There’s plenty of room for activities like biking, hiking, fishing and boating.
Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway
Sink into nature on this 82-mile byway in northwest Colorado. The scenic drive on average takes two and a half hours unless you have to stop to enjoy all the views. Colorado’s third largest natural lake is a small detour off the byway known as the “Cradle of Wilderness.” Campgrounds are located on the Meeker and Yampa side of the byway with the largest new Trappers Lake.
Maroon Bells
For one of the most incredible views you can enjoy, head to the Marron bells, a twin set of 14ers off of Maroon Lake. Demand is high here and access to the road only happens twice a day, from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm. Three campgrounds are located in the woods by a creek, as well as walk-in sites for some easy tent camping.
Vasquez Ridge
Winter Park is just as beautiful in the spring and summer as it is during winter. Tons of dispersed camping provides an intimate stay with nature. You will find hiking and fishing all around.
Guanella Pass
12 miles outside of Georgetown is some greatly dispersed campaign, as well as three campgrounds. Head to Clear Lake for some fishing or relaxation. If you feel like conquering another 14er, Mount Bierstadt is only a short drive away.
Cache La Poudre Scenic Byway
This 101-mile byway is packed with dispersed camping and has plenty of recreational activities thanks to the scenery and river. Knowing where to look for campsites is key to enjoy your time up the valley, and the Roosevelt Ranger District has a map to assist with your search.
Remember to check the weather before heading out for a weekend in nature. It’s always a roll of the dice with Colorado and these six off road camping destinations are meant for a couple days’ stay.
